Shows and scheduling
2 Dec 2012 11:45 amIt certainly has been an education. I'm at an art fair at the moment. I admit I live in the current middle ages, Viking and Renaissance Fairs, SCA, Faeriecon, and and Science Fiction. It's been a long time since I did a truly mundane show. And to be fair, it wasn't my booth. I was just helping. I learned about displays for art, pricing, mailing lists, and so on. It seems to me to be a lot of work. The booth fees are high and the crowds weren't here yesterday. I hope today proves me wrong.
I have done art shows, like A Fair in the Park. I know this year has been a strange one. Elections, fiscal cliffs, the wage gap, etc. And demographics change. A good show ten years ago is not the same today. Sometimes weather effects attendance, sometimes conflicts with other events, football games, etc. But for me, this year was dismal at best. I had only four or five truly worthy shows. The rest I chalk up to bad decision making on my part. So next year's schedule is going to look a little different. I am going to spend more time in the studio and do fewer shows. And hopefully the luck will be with me and I'll be able to continue doing what I do. If not, I shall truly miss it. I love what I do. I enjoy chatting with people, but the bottom line is that I have to make a living. I am not independently weathy. If no one buys, I cannot come back. Economics is a hard master to live with.
