It was a long day. Massive quantities of dishes and glassware were hand washed as I prepared to empty the kitchen wire shelving rack. It will soon be a seedling nursery. The goal is to get a wire rack for kitchen supplies that actually fits in the hole. Many items were allocated to the basement, canning cupboards, or other locations. It must have been 20 trips at least up and down the stairs.

Preparing for seed starting

Since it’s Tuesday, its a post office errand day. Orders had to be printed, packaged and shipped. The printer gave me fits. I am not fond of HP at this point, not at all. What should have been fast and time-saving was an ordeal. I thought I'd bought a printer, not a paper shredder. Silly of me, really. What was I thinking? After orders got packaged, on to lunch. Oh wait, somewhere in there, a load of laundry got washed and hung on the clothes rack.

I make fries from organic potatoes because its cheaper than buying chips. Lunch was grilled cheese, fries and coleslaw. Yes, there's still another cabbage from the garden in the fridge to grate for another batch. It's amazing how much longer my produce lasts in the fridge compared to store-bought, even the local stuff. Next on the to-do list was to remove the boatload of snow we got last night. Six inches of heavy, snowman-making beautiful snow! It took an hour. I was quite out of breath and needed to hydrate and sit.

Next came the library and the post office excursion. No trouble after we cleared the car and shoveled a good bit of the street. Normally around here no one bothers with shoveling much because it usually melts in a day. We will be getting a polar vortex soon. The temperatures will not go above freezing between now and then. Folks aren't going to understand why they can't shovel the snow that is now ice. I saw quite a few cars that will soon be frozen to their driveways. I sure hope someone takes care of the snow before then.

And then this evening after dinner, I got help getting the wire rack down the stairs. Then I played with lights and set a timer. Hoping it actually works. I got out trays. The 11th is the new moon, perfect for planting my greens- things like celery, kale, brussel sprouts, and maybe chard. A week later I hope to start leeks and onions. I have to look through my seed for any herb that takes a long time, like parsley, or bulb fennel, or savory. I will be sterilizing the trays with peroxide or maybe I'll plant but water with chamomile tea to start. It is great against fungus and diseases. The soil blocker is ready.

Preparing for seed starting

Planting times depend on your average last frost date. For me, the frost date varies so greatly. I transplant most of these into bigger pots in March to wait until the forecast is right in April. They harden off on the porch most of April anyway where I can take them in at night. I can always put them in bigger pots then if the weather is still unsettled. All of these are cold hardy plants. Warm weather plants don't get started until next month. The only thing that should get started earlier is sweet potato slips. My sweet potatoes aren't doing much on the window sill right now. It's probably too cold.

Tomorrow's another day with it's own list of chores.
