Chrono made an excellant marmalade with blood oranges and cara cara oranges. Typically they come into season at the end of February. We noticed a distinct lack of oranges this year. All we found were mandarin oranges, Candy Mandies. There were no Valencia oranges. I have to think the California fires were responsible.

Another thing that happened this week, we finally have both hot and cold running water in the kitchen and the bathroom again. I can't begin to tell you how exciting this is! You really have no idea until you have to haul water up from the basement daily. As part of the solution, we had to get a new faucet. The plumber also fixed the shut-off valve. He and I had an excellent conversation about backup systems, for heat, water, sewage, and electric. I have confirmed I am not crazy or paranoid. Pardon the dirt, but without water I wasn't able to clean the sink for a long time. Here's the new faucet:

I should change the title of my post to The Daily Menhir. Each day I work on leveling the cinderblocks from their winter dishevelment into something resembling order and level. I am so out-of-shape that I can only do a little at a time. Here's how they started out:

Today's progress:

I also went out and measured the bed I wrote about yesterday. I'll have (7) 18" squares to plant in. It's suppose to start raining around 4 pm tomorrow. It's so dry here. I want to get spinach and radishes started. I'll be covering them up for the cold snap but I'll let the rain water them in. I'm dreaming of a fresh salad. We bought store lettuce. It has no flavor. I went out in the dark to pick sorrel and arugula. It helped a lot.

More yard cleanup continued. I put posts in. Had to climb up a rickety ladder with my heavy post pounder. I did not realize how sturdy the posts are. I bought whatever they had at the hardware store. These are beefy! I only had two. I commandeered another post for the middle. OMG, what a difference! I still have to buy chicken wire. Cucumbers will be going here. Honestly, they don't need the beefy posts but it will do for this year.

Beware old ladies pounding posts on ladders

I planted peas in this section. I still need to make a note of it in my planting journal. Renee's Garden, Sugar Daddy snap peas. I planted the whole packet. I will be planting snow peas in the back yard once I get the cinderblocks square.

Future home of snap peas

I should sit down and get organized so I know what I'm doing tomorrow. Take care everyone!

I picked up some blood oranges this week. The lack of juice is disturbing, they were on the drier side of things. Which is disappointing. I may turn the rest into marmelade as well.
