Only April
9 Apr 2021 05:27 pmAnother day of near 80 degree temperatures. I have to keep reminding myself, it's only April! Only plant the cold weather crops in the ground. Everybody else can hang out outside but in pots that can come back into the house in case of a freeze. The ten day forecast looks to switch to actual spring temperatures next week, 60/40 range.
It's been another "Plant like your life depends on it" day. I meant to give it a rest, I mean me a rest. I wound yarn and prepared paperwork for Pennsic. I looked up vaccination places. I called businesses. Normal things. But when I washed sheets and hung them on the line to dry, I was outside and another project called to me. I needed to remove mulch from a bed and loosen the soil after yesterday's rain. Otherwise, the soil is like a rock and breaks tools. This is a bed that is getting greens planted in it. I have a lot of collard greens and chard. There was way too much sawdust and oak leaves from three years ago. (Do oak leaves ever break down?) My path is now covered in sawdust and my bed has actual soil in it. That was a win. I also leveled some cinderblocks. I need more cinderblocks but not at the prices I'm finding online. FB Marketplace wants $60 for 40 blocks! No thanks, I'll wait.
Now it's evening. I should start planting those collards. I am tired though. The cat woke me at 5:30 am. She wanted permission to stalk the robins out the window. They look to be first time nest builders. They lost half their nest in the storm. Pretty sure you don't need three foot long grass streamers hanging down. Half the nest had fallen onto the porch awning. No eggs yet.
The strawberries arrived. I planted 25 strawberry plants. It took a lot of poking to find containers for every one. If the container is 10" in diameter, it got three plants. Most of my pots are smaller though. I am tired but I still need to dig a hole for a blueberry, give it some peat moss and azomite. Means I have to find a shovel. I should also find screens for the windows. I just want a nap. I am still short on soil. Do I have to be an adult today?
