A Day to Dream
25 Nov 2021 05:12 pmToday was a relaxing day. No big feast, just simple fair. From oatmeal and maple syrup for breakfast to liver sausage and cheese on crackers for lunch, with some homemade pickles or coleslaw. Tonight will be leftover chicken and dumpling soup. I know a lot of you like to indulge. And that's fine. I have enough work to do as it is. I got one mammoth load of dishes done so I could make bread today. There will also be date cookies made after supper.

I've learned over the years that I dislike turkey. Turkey is what my cat eats. Not me. I no longer enjoy it. I do have potatoes and sweet potatoes for a weekend meal. Maybe with burgers and brats or maybe with a roast. I thought about grilling out today but the temperature has been dropping all day. It's rainy now. The high was 48 degrees at 9:00 this morning.

The hard-necked garlic got planted around the blueberry bushes before the weather came in. There were only 24 cloves. I thought there would be more. It's okay because there are 32 cloves of soft-necked garlic in the back yard. 56 bulbs of garlic is a lot for us to use. I plan to share some with my neighbor.

I enjoyed being outside despite the cold. I am feeling winter's chill more fiercely these days. The fresh air was nice. Once the wet weather passes, it'll be time to trim the trees. I have hedges to cut and dead wood to get rid of. Some trees need their tops lowered, especially the lilac. It thinks it would like to look in the second floor window. Lilacs should not be that tall IMHO.
I am looking again at work that needs to be done around the house. Some rooms need paint. Others need more work than that. I am hoping to streamline the work flow in the kitchen. At some point, we will need a new fridge. Ours is 32 years old. It makes a lot of noise and uses a significant quantity of electricity. I have an idea based on a video by The Elliot Homestead.

I like her fridge and butcher block area. While I don't have a budget for such extravagance, I do like the work flow and could adapt something like that to my kitchen. The wallpaper isn't bad either. I suspect my cupboards were the same 1960s trash that were resurfaced with dark paneling in the 1980s. I have done a previous post on my kitchen problems. If I get some time, I will wash the walls and ceiling this weekend, maybe scrape some peeling paint. I'd like to know what's under the section blocked off above my cupboards. My cupboards are too low, sometimes covering the electrical outlets. I am of two minds about wall shelves instead of cupboards. I don't have kids to worry about or train to put away dishes. Instead of a covered up section, I could see wine racks mounted to the wall. That would suit me fine. But if I remove anything, that means redoing a whole wall, one without insulation. No money for that. At this point, I'm still pricing items I need. Maybe, starting with butcher's block wood and a refrigerator.
Bottling the rhubarb wine is also on my agenda this weekend. Enjoy your day off whatever you decide to celebrate!
